What sets us apart?
Get comprehensive training in electrodiagnostics, interventional procedures, chronic pain treatment and more. Trainees work in both inpatient and outpatient settings as they provide care for patients with neuromusculoskeletal disorders, traumatic brain injuries and spinal cord injuries.
Our program offers opportunities for residents to work one-on-one with faculty during their rotations and pursue specialized interests early in their training.

Where you'll train

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital
Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, the primary teaching hospital for EVMS, is home to the area's only Level I trauma center and burn trauma unit and the region's premier heart program. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residents conduct inpatient rounds at this hospital. U.S. News and World Report has ranked Sentara Norfolk General Hospital among the nation's Best Hospitals for its cardiology and heart surgery program and diabetes and endocrinology program. U.S. News has also consistently named it one of Virginia's top 5 hospitals in its Best Regional Hospitals listings.

Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters
Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters (CHKD) is the only freestanding children's hospital in Virginia. With 206 beds, it is the regional pediatric referral center for coastal Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. The hospital is home to the area's largest and most advanced neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, as well as the state's only acute inpatient rehabilitation unit. Residents spend time at CHKD and its associated clinics as they treat inpatient pediatric patients.

Naval Medical Center Portsmouth
Naval Medical Center Portsmouth is the oldest continuously running hospital in the Navy. This fully accredited, tertiary care hospital is a 360-bed facility with an average daily inpatient load of 238 patients. Naval Medical Center Portsmouth's Physical Therapy Department operates three physical therapy divisions and offers aquatic therapy, electroneuromyographic nerve conduction velocity testing and physical medicine and rehabilitation services with a Wounded Warrior Project program.

Hampton Veterans Affairs Medical Center
The Hampton Veterans Affairs Medical Center has 142 acute beds in medicine, surgery, psychiatry and neurology, 234 extended care beds in intermediate medicine, palliative (hospice) care, spinal cord injury and nursing home care and a 294-bed rehabilitative residential care domiciliary for a total of 670 operating beds. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residents conduct outpatient rounds and electrodiagnostics at this facility.
Learn more about our GME programs
Our community-based Graduate Medical Education is one of the nation's few training programs in which all residencies are integrated among a number of hospitals and community clinic settings, instead of one fixed setting such as a university hospital. Our residents work at 14 teaching affiliate hospitals, staffing hospitals 24 hours a day, implementing new treatment methods and conducting research. They see patients from diverse backgrounds and work with community faculty.
