Celebrating 50 years of excellence in vascular surgery training
The Vascular Surgery Fellowship is one of the oldest and most distinguished programs in the United States. Established by Jock Wheeler, MD and Roger Gregory, MD in 1975, it was among the first twenty vascular surgery fellowships in the nation. Dr. Wheeler served as the inaugural program director until 1994.
Over the decades, we have remained committed to world-class training in open and endovascular surgery, vascular access, venous interventions, and vascular laboratory techniques. Our fellows train at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, a tertiary care Level I trauma center, with access to two hybrid operating rooms, two dedicated vascular catheterization labs, and one of the largest vascular ultrasound labs in the country.
Each year, the Vascular Surgery Division performs over 9,000 procedures, providing fellows with extensive hands-on experience, serving as the primary surgeon in more than 500 cases annually.
Through strong industry partnerships, our fellows gain early exposure to cutting-edge vascular technologies and emerging clinical devices in aortic, carotid, lower extremity, venous, and vascular access interventions. With a 100% board pass rate over the past 15 years, our graduates thrive in academic institutions, hybrid programs, and private practice settings. As we celebrate this milestone, we remain dedicated to training the next generation of vascular surgeons with an unwavering focus on excellence, innovation, and patient care.
