EVMS accepted its first class in September 1973. From 1973 until 1983 the Doctor of Medicine program was 36 months in length. Beginning in 1983, the Doctor of Medicine program length was extended to four years.

Phase I (15 months in length)

Students acquire the fundamentals of basic sciences and physical diagnosis.

Phase II

Students experience clerk­ ships in six disciplines.

Phase III

Devoted entirely to selectives in basic and clinical sciences. Students are evaluated on their mastery of specified objectives in each organ system in Phase I, clinical clerk­ ships in Phase II and selectives in Phase lll. Each department may elect to submit written comments on student's individual performance. These comments are part of the transcript.

  • HONORS: Awarded to those who elect to participate in advance objectives as designed by the individual department. The designation was discontinued as of January I, 1976.
  • COMPLETE: Received when all objectives assigned by the depart­ ment have been mastered.

The first year of approximately 40 weeks is presented in an integrated fashion to provide the students with a firm foundation in normal struc­ ture and function of the body.

The second year of approximately 35 weeks provides the student with an understanding of the biology of disease, abnormal structure and function.

During the third year, stu­dents rotate through 48 weeks of required clinical experiences (clerkships) in six disciplines.

The final year consists of 12 weeks of required clinical experiences and 20 weeks of elective experiences. Students are evaluated on the achievement of course objectives and grades are assigned using a modified nonn-reference system.

  • PASS: Received when all objectives assigned have been mastered.
  • FAIL: Received when the student fails to meet the assigned objec­ tives. The course may be repeated the following year.

  • Fail (F): Failure

Remediation grades are restricted to Pass or Fail only.
