CHOW focuses on combating chronic illnesses, such as hypertension and diabetes, with nutrition and exercise. We seek to educate patients, students and healthcare professionals to pursue healthy eating and exercise.

‌Our students lead lunch lectures and cooking and exercise classes, develop nutrition plans and work with local community partners to help community members take control of their health.

Our community partners include the Chesapeake Care Clinic, American Heart Association, EVMS Family and Community Medicine, the Virginia Cooperative Extension and the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia.

Monroe Mentors is a mentorship program that partners with the 21st Century Community Learning Center and James Monroe Elementary School. EVMS students attend weekly tutoring sessions at the Elementary School where they provide guidance on school assignments, plan fun and interactive projects, and provide education on different topics such as health and nutrition, collaboration, and overcoming mistakes and failures.
