You can succeed in an online learning environment.

How online learning works

Although online learning has many similar characteristics to classroom-based learning, there are unique opportunities and advantages. Learning online extends flexibility to students and instructors to customize the experience.

A key feature of online learning is delivery modality.

SynchronousAsynchronous

Synchronous courses are live web-based classes that occur in real-time and meet online during a specific date and time. These courses are just like face-to-face, but you don't come to campus. Instructors may record classes for review.

This is an engaging approach to online learning which offers an opportunity for instant clarification.

Asychronous courses are web-based classes that do not require regular meetings. Learning can occur at a time and place suitable for you. There are assignment due dates, so the courses are not self-paced.

This approach is convenient and flexible.

Course content

Most EVMS Online courses are asynchronous, which means you don’t have to worry about logging on and listening to your lectures at a specific time each week. Instead, you can learn when it’s most convenient for you, whether that’s late at night, before work or during your daily commute. Regular lectures and other course content are accessible through Blackboard and may be delivered in a variety of formats, such as PowerPoint, video, audio files, or some combination of these. If your professor does require synchronous sessions, this will be communicated to you in advance, so you have time to coordinate your schedule.

Assessment

Tests and assignments are typically delivered through Blackboard. Assessments may take on a variety of formats including tests, simulation activities, case studies, essays, literature reviews, presentations, and group projects.  Typically, students log into a course, review instructions, complete assignments or tests in advance of the due date, then submit their work via Blackboard. Instructors provide grades and feedback through Blackboard too, so all communication is streamlined. All course requirements and due dates are communicated in advance which helps students accommodate family and work demands.

Hands-on components

Your program may require a lab, practicum, or summer residency. These hands-on components to online degrees are great opportunities to deepen your connections with your classmates and to learning.  Plus, they are very practical, so you’ll walk away with real-world experiences.
