The focus of the Environmental Health track is understanding and addressing important environmental health challenges in the U.S. and around the globe. This track familiarizes students with a broad range of 21st century issues at the local, national and international levels. Some issues include children’s environmental health, food safety and foodborne illness, air and water quality, disaster preparedness and response, environmental health policy, environmental hazards and vulnerable populations, risk assessment, risk management and risk communication.

Career Opportunities
The Global Environmental track allows those with little or no background in public health to enter into a rewarding career field. The track is also ideal for current public health professionals looking to earn an advanced degree for more career mobility, or to update skills and competencies. Graduates in Global Environmental Health can choose a variety of career paths in government, the uniformed services, nonprofit organizations, the private sector and international organizations.
Educational Format
The educational program includes 43 total credit hours. Classes are taught in three terms per year (fall, spring, summer). Full-time students can complete this program in two years. Part-time students are required to complete the degree within 6 years of their start date. All students are paired with an academic adviser.
Classes are taught online and on campus in the evenings on the campuses of EVMS or ODU to accommodate working professionals. Online options are presented either in an asynchronous web-based or live video-streamed format.
Recommended Prerequisites
Applicants to the Environmental Health Track should hold a bachelor's degree that includes at least 3 credits of college-level statistics/mathematics and some college-level coursework in the basic sciences, such as biology and chemistry.
