First year

The first-year resident rotates through inpatient internal medicine, obstetrics and night float, benign gynecology, ambulatory clinics, ultrasound/genetics and continuity care clinics.

Emphasis is placed on history and physical exam skills, normal obstetrics and benign gynecology. Residents learn and perform uncomplicated vaginal and Caesarean deliveries as well as minor and major gynecological surgery procedures.

Second year

During the second year, the resident rotates through obstetrics and night float, gynecology/gynecologic surgery, gynecologic oncology, family planning, ambulatory clinics, and continuity care clinics.

During this year, residents increase the level of participation in major gynecologic surgeries, including oncology cases.

Third year

The third-year rotation includes more advanced gynecologic surgery, continued exposure to continuity care clinics, more exposure to complicated obstetrics, outpatient high-risk obstetrics clinic, experience in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery and reproductive endocrinology.

The third-year resident assumes chief-level responsibilities on the reproductive endocrinology service and the urogynecology service. The third year also offers a four-week elective.

  • Reproductive endocrinology and infertility: 4 weeks

  • Night float: 12 weeks
  • Gynecologic oncology: 4 weeks
  • Elective: 4 weeks

Fourth year

In the fourth year, residents again rotate through obstetrics, benign gynecology, gynecology oncology, and ambulatory clinics.

At this point, the resident assumes full responsibility for his or her patients and greater teaching responsibility for fellow residents and medical students.
