Academic Search Complete
Description: Academic Search Complete is the world's most valuable and comprehensive scholarly, multi-disciplinary full text database, with more than 5,500 full-text periodicals, including more than 4,600 peer-reviewed journals. In addition to full text, this database offers indexing and abstracts for more than 9,500 journals and a total of more than 10,000 publications including monographs, reports, conference proceedings, etc. The database features PDF content going back as far as 1887, with the majority of full text titles in native (searchable) PDF format. Searchable cited references are provided for nearly 1,000 journals.

Access Medicine
Description: AccessMedicine is designed for direct access to the information necessary for completing evaluations, diagnoses, case management decisions, conducting research, medical education, or self-assessment and board review.
Contains over 55 textbooks including Harrison's Online, CURRENT Medical Diagnosis and Treatment, Tintinalli's Emergency Medicine, and the Lange Educational Library.
Includes USMLEasy, with 3,800 USMLE-formatted questions, answers and explanations including references back to AccessMedicine for further reading.
Currency: Updated daily by world-renowned physicians and expanded continuously.

ACP Journal Club
Description: ACP Journal Club (ACPJC) is an evidence based surveillance and abstracting service published by the American College of Physicians (ACP). It contains structured abstracts that summarize the most important methodologically sound articles pertaining to clinical practice.
Search: Uses 'full-text' search techniques (the database will look for search terms in the article text and title) to find abstracts. Indexed articles provide links to the PubMed record and are available in full-text. The Basic Search function allows you to enter key terms and phrases that will be searched against the ACPJC collection. The Advance Search function provides a search template that allows the use of Boolean logic (AND/OR/NOT/NEAR) to combine search terms and search like terms. Click on the SEARCH button in the tool bar at the top of the page. The default is the Basic Search. Search results are displayed by the title of the article. Click on the title and the full-text will be displayed.
Scope: Primary and secondary (reviews and guidelines) clinical studies that meet key methodological criteria are summarized and commented on by experts. Covers internal medicine and primary care.
Use: Best used for questions that can be addressed using clinical research, strongest for therapy and prognosis, weaker for diagnosis and causation. (Foreground Questions)
Validity: Articles are selected if they report evidence that could change what practitioners do. Explicit methods of selecting and summarizing articles are described in the introduction.
Applicability: Each abstract summarizes details about patients, practitioners and practices; experts comment on clinical relevance.
Currency: Publishing began in 1991. Six issues per year.

ACPMedicine, Scientific American Medicine (through STAT!Ref)
Description: Sam is an evidence-based internal medicine diagnosis and treatment reference. Developed from WebMD Scientific American Medicine, Sam is continually updated and is available in several print and electronic formats.
Search: designed to allow the user to browse by topic or use a keyword search function. Provides 'full-text' search techniques (the database will look for search terms in the article text and title).
Scope: Covers the 15 sub-specialties of internal medicine, plus key topics in Women's Health, Preventive Medicine, Psychiatry, and more.
Use: Organized by health condition and disease. SAM provides in-depth coverage of topics. It is an excellent source for Background Questions.
Validity: Content is subject to editorial, peer and user review.
Applicability: Narrative summaries of conditions including sections on epidemiology.
Currency:. Updates are ongoing and occur frequently. Over 30% new content per year.

ACS (American Chemical Society) Publications
Includes full-text from all 34 American Chemical Society publications, from the broad coverage journals such as the Journal of the American Chemical Society to the specialist journals such as Environmental Science and Technology.

Agricola
Over 3.3 million bibliographic records of journal articles, theses, patents, software, and technical reports related to agriculture. This extensive database provides selective worldwide coverage of primary information sources in agriculture and related fields. The literature cited is primarily in English, but over one-third of the database comprises citations in Western European, Slavic, Asian, and African languages. Since 1985, the CAB Thesaurus has been used to select controlled vocabulary terms for subject indexing. Library of Congress Subject Headings are used as controlled vocabulary for cataloging records.
Currency: 1970 to present. Updates Monthly.

Alternative Health Watch
Description: This database focuses on the many perspectives of complementary, holistic and integrated approaches to health care and wellness. It offers libraries full text articles for more than 180 international, and often peer-reviewed journals and reports. In addition, there are hundreds of pamphlets, booklets, special reports, original research and book excerpts. Alt HealthWatch provides in-depth coverage across the full spectrum of subject areas covered by complementary and alternative medicine. This database features indexing and abstracts going back as far as 1984, and full text going back as far as 1990.

AMED (Allied and Complementary Medicine Database)
AMED is an alternative medicine database designed for physicians, therapists, medical researchers and clinicians looking to learn more about alternative treatments. The database contains basic bibliographic records for relevant articles from over 600 journals. Abstracts are also included for citations from 1995 to present. Subjects covered include Complementary Medicine, Occupational Therapy, Palliative Care, Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Rehabilitation and Speech and Language.

American Hospital Directory
Description: The American Hospital Directory provides online data for over 6,000 hospitals.
Scope: The information about hospitals is built from both public and private sources including Medicare claims data (MedPAR and OPPS), hospital cost reports, and other files obtained from the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
Currency: Frequent updates.

American Math Society Journals
Full-text access to all 8 journals published by the AMS.

American Poetry Database
American Poetry includes 40,356 poems from 1,288 works by 209 poets, along with six landmark anthologies of American poetry. The database gathers the works of the most influential American poets, from the Colonial period to the early twentieth century.

Description: The Associates Programs Source is designed specifically for junior & community colleges with a primary focus on disciplines of study within associate degrees and certification programs. Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Digital Library
Citations and full-text articles in the area of computing and information technologies from journals, magazines, and conference proceedings published by the ACM, one of the world's largest computing societies.

BestBETs (Best Evidence Topics) Free resource
Description: BETs are clinically appraised topics developed in the Emergency Department of Manchester Royal Infirmary, UK, to provide rapid evidence-based answers to real-life clinical questions, using a systematic approach to reviewing the literature.
Search: The database can be searched using Boolean operators or browsed by title or topic.
Scope: Each Topic answers a carefully worded 3-part question, using a structured approach to finding and reviewing the literature.
Use: Although BETs initially had an emergency medicine focus, there are a significant number of BETs covering cardiothoracics, nursing, primary care and pediatrics.
Validity: BETs take into account the shortcomings of much current evidence, allowing physicians to make the best of what there is.
Currency: Appraised topics provide the initial development date and the date of the latest update.

BioOne
Includes a broad selection of full-text, peer-reviewed journals & bulletins published by American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS) member societies & other closely related organizations. Currently, around 45 journals are available.

BMJ Best Practice
Informs clinical practice and provides key evidence and relevant resources at the point of care, organized in structured, consistent and intuitive way. BMJ uses a rigorous and continuous evidence-based editorial processes. 

Business Source Complete
Description: Business Source Complete is the world's definitive scholarly business database, providing the leading collection of bibliographic and full text content. As part of the comprehensive coverage offered by this database, indexing and abstracts for the most important scholarly business journals back as far as 1886 are included. In addition to the searchable cited references provided for more than 1,200 journals.
Currency: 1982 to present.

CINAHL
Description: The CINAHL database is the authoritative source of information for the professional literature of nursing, allied health, biomedicine, and healthcare. The database also includes relevant materials from seventeen allied health disciplines, plus biomedicine, management, behavioral sciences, health sciences librarianship, education, and consumer health.
Search: CINAHL tutorial
Scope: CINAHL database provides references to books, book chapters, pamphlets, audiovisuals, dissertations, educational software, selected conference proceedings, standards of professional practice, nurse practice acts, critical paths, and research instruments. It provides indexing for 2,857 journals with over 1,000,000 citations.
Currency: 1982 to present.

Clase and Periodica
Indexes documents published in Latin American journals specializing in the social sciences and humanities.

ClinicalKey is a clinical resource designed to provide physicians with fast, clinically-relevant answers from Elsevier's library of proprietary medical and surgical content. ClinicalKey serves the information needs of medical and surgical specialties by bringing together content from Elsevier and trusted third parties including over 1,000 books, 500 journals, thousands of videos, and millions of images. ClinicalKey also gives physicians access to point-of-care content from Clinical Overviews (formerly First Consult). ClinicalKey is updated on a continuous basic.

Cochrane Library
Description: Cochrane's Database of Systematic Reviews (DSR) is a collection of high quality systematic reviews of controlled trials, including unpublished trials, produced by groups of collaborators (researchers and practitioners) who are organized through the Cochrane Collaboration. The Cochrane Library includes 7 other databases including: 1) Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness (DARE) - critical assessments and structured abstracts of good systematic reviews published elsewhere and 2) Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CCRCT) - bibliographic information on controlled trials.
Search: Each database within the Cochrane Library can be searched simultaneously by using the keyword search function provided from the home page. Search results (number of hits) are listed according to specific database. To display search results, click on the number of hits located directly across from the database name. The search browser is not organized by clinical conditions. Articles are indexed according to the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). Search by using the keyword search function for the best results. Most articles are provided in full-text.
Scope: Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (DSR) includes planned [Protocol] and completed [Review] reviews. The topics reflect the interests and priorities of Cochrane Collaboration members.
Use: DSR is best for therapy or preventive care questions that can be addressed by strong quantitative study designs. (Foreground Questions) Does not cover Diagnosis at this time.
Validity: Strictly controlled methods for identifying, reviewing, and performing the meta-analysis for evidence in each review. Extensive links to source evidence including studies excluded from the review.
Applicability: Systematic reviews often include extensive sub-group analyses and policy considerations. Effect sizes usually expressed as absolute risk reduction and number needed to treat. Cumulative meta-analysis can be displayed for subgroups.
Currency: Publishing began in 1993. Updates occur quarterly, the date of last update is given for each review. Substantive changes are highlighted.

Columbia International Affairs Online (CIAO)
Full text of more than 400 working papers, 40 conference proceedings, and 10 books annually, as well as abstracts from leading international relations research journals, brief reports, monthly statistics and maps.

Communication & Mass Media Complete
Description: Communication & Mass Media Complete provides the most robust, quality research solution in areas related to communication and mass media. CMMC incorporates the content of CommSearch (formerly produced by the National Communication Association) and Mass Media Articles Index (formerly produced by Penn State) along with numerous other journals in communication, mass media, and other closely-related fields of study to create a research and reference resource of unprecedented scope and depth encompassing the breadth of the communication discipline. CMMC offers cover-to-cover ("core”) indexing and abstracts for more than 440 journals, and selected ("priority”) coverage of nearly 200 more, for a combined coverage of more than 640 titles. Furthermore, this database includes full text for 326 journals.

Computer & Applied Sciences Complete
Description: Computers & Applied Sciences Complete covers the research and development spectrum of the computing and applied sciences disciplines. CASC provides indexing and abstracts for more than 1,720 academic journals, professional publications, and other reference sources from a diverse collection. Full text is also available for more than 670 periodicals.

Consumer Health Complete
Comprehensive resource for consumer-oriented health content. It is designed to support patients' information needs and foster an overall understanding of health-related topics. CHC provides content covering all areas of health and wellness from mainstream medicine to the many perspectives of complementary, holistic and integrated medicine. This full text database covers topics such as aging, cancer, diabetes, drugs & alcohol, fitness, nutrition & dietetics, children's health, men & women's health, etc.

DynaMed
Description: DynaMed includes the DynaMed database and additional content including overviews and recommendations for 3,200 topics along with in-depth specialty content and links to Micromedex® drug content.
Medical images and graphs from the American College of Physicians, The JAMA Network, Centers for Disease Control, Radiopaedia, and Massachusetts General Infectious Disease database are imbedded and searchable.
Dynamed uses the GRADE system to make it easy for users to understand the quality of evidence supporting its recommendations.
In 2015, DynaMed replaced ACP PIER/ Smart Medicine as the American College of Physicians (ACP) member database.

Education Research Complete
Description: Education Research Complete is the definitive online resource for education research. Topics covered include all levels of education from early childhood to higher education, and all educational specialties, such as multilingual education, health education, and testing. Education Research Complete provides indexing and abstracts for more than 1,840 journals, as well as full text for more than 950 journals, and includes full text for more than 81 books and monographs, and for numerous education-related conference papers.

Medscape Reference (formerly eMedicine) Free resource
Description: Launched in 1996, www.eMedicine.com comprises one of the largest and most current clinical knowledge databases available to physicians and other healthcare professionals.
Search: Search across all sections or browse by condition in the Adult Medicine, Adult Surgery or Pediatrics sections.
Scope: Nearly 10,000 physician authors and editors contribute to the eMedicine Clinical Knowledge Base, which contains articles on 7,000 diseases and disorders. The database also contains 30,000 multimedia files and features the largest online repository of medical education credits for physicians, nurses, and optometrists.
Validity: eMedicine's professional content undergoes 4 levels of physician peer review plus an additional review by a PharmD prior to publication.
Currency: The evidence-based content, updated regularly, provides the latest practice guidelines in 59 medical specialties.

EndNote Online Tutorials: Endnote online guides

English Poetry, 600-1900, contains poems in English from Anglo-Saxon times to the end of the nineteenth century by writers from the British Isles. It covers the works of 1,257 named poets and many items by different anonymous hands.

ERIC
Description: The Education Resources Information Center (ERIC) is a digital library of education-related resources, sponsored by the Institute of Education Sciences of the U.S. Department of Education. ERIC is the world's largest database of journal and non-journal education literature containing nearly 1.2 million citations going back to 1966.
Search: OVID Tutorial
Scope: ERIC consists of two files: Resources in Education, which covers the document literature, consisting of research reports, curriculum and teaching guides, conference papers, and books; and Current Index to Journals in Education, which covers published journal literature from over 775 periodicals.
Currency: Over 30,000 records added annually.

Exam Master Online is an USMLE and board preparation review tool that provides access to thousands of basic and clinical sciences questions. The interface allows for quick and easy navigation, and provides the ability to create customized practice exams and study blocks. The EXAM MASTER testing interface closely matches what is actually used on the USMLE exam. This new test mode interface includes other features found on the exam including the ability to attach notes to each question. EVMS affiliates off campus must enter the site via the Library web page. That will authenticate them as authorized users.

Description: Factiva provides essential business news and information together with the content delivery tools and services that enable professionals to make better decisions faster. Factiva's unrivaled collection of more than 10,000 authoritative sources includes the exclusive combination of The Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times™, Dow Jones and Reuters newswires and the Associated Press, as well as Reuters Fundamentals, and D&B company profiles.

FirstSearch
Description: FirstSearch is an OCLC services providing access to 20 databases including WorldCat and ArticleFirst.
Search: The database supports Boolean (and, or, not) searching and offers basic keyword searching and advanced field searching. Users can also limit a search by database or topic.
Scope: FirstSearch offers access to more than 10 million full-text and full-image articles on most research topics.

Government Printing Office (GPO) Catalog
Records of all subjects of interest to the US Government. Produced by the Government Printing Office.

GreenFILE is a freely accessible research database focusing on the relationship between human beings and the environment, with well-researched but accessible information on topics ranging from global warming to recycling to alternate fuel sources and beyond. Comprised of scholarly and general interest titles, as well as government documents and reports, GreenFILE offers a unique perspective on the positive and negative ways humans affect the ecology. Drawing on the connection between the environment and disciplines such as agriculture, education, law, health and technology, GreenFILE will serve as an informative resource for anyone concerned about the issues facing our planet. GreenFILE's initial release will include A&I for more than 600 titles, including comprehensive coverage - from to volume 1, issue 1 to present - for Bioscience (back to 1964), Conservation Biology (back to 1987), i>Journal of Ecology (back to 1913) and Journal of Environmental Planning & Management (back to 1948). Health Source: Consumer Edition (EBSCOhost)
Description: This database is the richest collection of consumer health information available to libraries worldwide, providing information on many health topics including the medical sciences, food sciences and nutrition, childcare, sports medicine and general health. Health Source: Consumer Edition provides access to nearly 80 full text, consumer health magazines.

Health Source: Nursing/ Academic Edition (EBSCOhost)
Description: This database provides nearly 550 scholarly full text journals focusing on many medical disciplines. Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition also features the Lexi-PAL Drug Guide, which covers 1,300 generic drug patient education sheets with more than 4,700 brand names.

Hospitality & Tourism Complete
Description: Hospitality & Tourism Index is a bibliographic database covering scholarly research and industry news relating to all areas of hospitality and tourism. This comprehensive database contains more than 721,000 records from more than 650 titles, with coverage dating as far back as 1965.

Humanities International Complete
Description: Humanities International Complete provides full text of hundreds of journals, books and other published sources from around the world. Produced by Whitston Publishing (an imprint of EBSCO Publishing), this database includes all data from Humanities International Index (more than 2,000 journals and 2 million records) plus unique full text content, much of which is not found in other databases. The database includes full text for more than 730 journals.

IOP (Institute of Physics) Journals
IOP Institute of Physics provides open access to physics, science and scientific research. Also know as IOPScience or IOP Science

Journal of Medical Insight (JOMI)
JOMI films and publishes surgical procedures offering incision-to-closure, long-form, high-quality, surgeon-narrated didactic experiences / masterclasses. JOMI is used by residents, attendings, medical students, surgical technologists, clinical staff, patients, and others around the world to help them prepare for cases, learn about novel advancements, and otherwise to have a deep and rich learning experience.

Description: Journal of Visual Experiments (JoVE) is a creator and publisher of video solutions in scientific research and learning. The Brickell Medical Sciences Library subscribes to the biology module of JoVE.  Note that JoVE does not participate in InterLibrary Loan (ILL).  PubMed Central maintains a JoVE archive 2006-2018.

Legal Collection
Description: This database contains full text for more than 250 of the world's most respected, scholarly law journals. The Legal Collection is an authoritative source for information on current issues, studies, thoughts and trends of the legal world.

Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts (LISTA) is a free research database for library and information science studies. LISTA provides indexing and abstracting for hundreds of key journals, books, research reports. It is EBSCO's provides access to this resource on a continual basis.

Literature Resource Center
Full-text biographies, bibliographies, and critical analyses of more than 120,000 writers from a variety of periods and disciplines. Includes access to the MLA International Bibliographic database.

Masterfile Premier
Description: This multidisciplinary database provides full text for more than 1,750 general reference publications with full text information dating as far back as 1975. Covering virtually every subject area of general interest, MasterFILE Premier also includes nearly 500 full text reference books, full text from 86,019 biographies, 105,787 full text primary source documents, and an Image Collection of 293,480 photos, maps and flags. This database is updated daily via EBSCOhost.

Medical Letter
Description: The Medical Letter, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that publishes critical appraisals of new prescription drugs and comparative reviews of previously approved drugs. The editorial process relies on a consensus of experts to evaluate the drug facts in order to help prescribers choose the most effective drug treatment.

Medical Modeling and Simulation Database (MMSD)
Description: The premier gateway to a broad array of resources and services related to the medical modeling and simulation world, including content for practitioners, researchers, and those working in academia. Contains a Research Articles database, a Companies and Products database, and a Simulation Centers database.
Currency: Updated quarterly.

MedicLatina
Description: MedicLatina is a unique collection of medical research and investigatory journals from renowned Latin American and Spanish publishers. This Spanish language database contains full text for nearly 120 peer-reviewed medical journals in native Spanish.

MEDLINE
Description: MEDLINE, the National Library of Medicine's (NLM) bibliographic database, is the primary source in the United States for information from the biomedical literature, containing over 16 million references to articles from more than 4,800 journals. MEDLINE is the computerized counterpart of Index Medicus, the Index to Dental Literature, and the International Nursing Index.
Search: OVID Tutorial
Scope: MEDLINE covers basic biomedical research and the clinical sciences since 1966. It also includes nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, allied health, and pre-clinical sciences. The full text of the article is generally not provided, but over 75 percent of the records contain abstracts written by the article's author. The database is international in scope.
Use: This version of MEDLINE (see also PubMed and PubMed LinkOut below) is produced by OVID and identifies which journals are held in the EVMS Library collection. OVID MEDLINE provides full-text links to 140 journals.
Currency: Updated daily. Indexed citations to 1966. Un-indexed citations from 1950-1966.

MedlinePlus (Consumer Health) Free resource
Description: MedlinePlus provides information to help answer health questions. MedlinePlus brings together authoritative information from NLM, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and other government agencies and health-related organizations.
Search: Search tips
Scope: Contains extensive information from the National Institutes of Health and other trusted sources on over 700 diseases and conditions. There are also lists of hospitals and physicians, a medical encyclopedia and a medical dictionary, health information in Spanish, extensive information on prescription and nonprescription drugs, health information from the media, and links to thousands of clinical trials.
Currency: MedlinePlus is updated daily.

Description: UpToDate is a clinical consulting tool covering the internal medicine subspecialties, family medicine and pediatrics. Topic reviews are based on clinical conditions. Search: Browse the table of contents or search using key words. Searches can be narrowed by a topic list or by entering a second search term after the first search is completed. No Boolean searching. UpToDate also provides a tutorial on their website.
Scope: Covers internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, and obstetrics; some are still in development. Strong in all areas including clinical presentation, differential diagnosis, and causation but the "strength of evidence” is best presented for therapy.
