Thank you for your interest in the Endocrinology and Metabolism Fellowship Program at Eastern Virginia Medical School!

The mission of our fellowship program is to provide a 2-year clinical program wherein fellows are trained to enter clinical endocrine practice and provide top-notch endocrine care to a diverse population of patients with endocrine diseases. Fellows are trained in both outpatient and inpatient endocrinology, through their own outpatient clinics, a variety of clinical rotation experiences including, but not limited to, pediatric endocrinology, endocrinology and pregnancy, and reproductive endocrinology, and our inpatient general endocrine and cardiovascular/diabetes consult services. Hampton Roads is a diverse community, and our fellows rotate through a diverse group of clinical settings, including our own endocrine clinics at the Strelitz Diabetes Center in Norfolk, the Hampton Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC), and the Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and Heart Hospital. In these settings, fellows learn to care for endocrine conditions in patients from a variety of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds that match that of our community.

In our clinics, the fellows work with certified diabetes educators. They are trained by faculty skilled in thyroid ultrasound and fine-needle aspiration, and bone density interpretation, and are taught the skills necessary to utilize insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors in clinical practice.

Fellows are involved in scholarly activities including abstract presentations at national meetings and are involved in quality improvement projects designed to help them learn the significance of quality improvement and how it will apply to their clinical practice. We have an active and involved faculty who enjoy participating in fellows’ weekly didactics (case conference, lectures, journal club and board review). At the completion of their fellowship training, our graduates are well prepared to sit for the Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism board examination.

Importantly, diversity and inclusion are very important to our endocrinology fellowship, especially in regard to trainee recruitment, selection and retention. We strive to recruit fellows from diverse backgrounds, and in particular want to include fellows whose backgrounds match that of our community.

Thank you again for your interest in our Endocrinology and Metabolism Fellowship Program! Please reach out to our program coordinator, Ms. Natalie Gray with any questions at all.

Respectfully,
