Why I Chose EVMS: Norfolk is the perfectly sized city for me. There is a ton to do downtown and having spent my graduate/medical school years in Cleveland, OH and Syracuse, NY, the weather is much better here. It was very important to find somewhere that had both a level 1 trauma center, community hospital, and children's hospital to get really good exposure. I think it is awesome that we are the only surgical residents floating around- always enough cases to go around, and that means that most of the higher acuity and really compelling general surgery cases in the Hampton Roads area are being done by our attendings. I was really impressed with how Dr. Britt called all the applicants "Dr." on the day of our interview. This is consistent with the way that the residents are treated here and the high expectations placed on us. It has been awesome looking back on the last year + and seeing the progress that I have made.
