Visiting Students

Visiting student guidelines for application and registration

Our school welcomes eligible visiting students as space permits. To be eligible, ALL visiting students must provide the following documentation in addition to their application materials:

  • Current transcript
  • Proof of HIPAA training
  • Proof of Bloodborne Pathogens training
  • Basic Life Support/Advance Life Support Certification (MD/DO students must have ACLS)
  • Proof of personal health care coverage
  • Background check (must be comprised of ALL the following):
    • Social Security Number Verification
    • National Criminal Search
    • County Criminal Search
    • National Sexual Offender Search
    • HHS/OIG List of Excluded Individuals/Entities
    • GSA List of Parties Excluded from Federal Programs

The following applies to all visiting students:

  • Each student is responsible for obtaining housing accommodations during his/her stay here.
  • We will complete evaluations for all students and provide evaluations to the visiting student’s home institution.
  • Credit for learning experiences will be given by the institution granting the degree to the student.
  • All visiting students must check-in prior to the start of the learning experience and complete an exit interview with the Visiting Student Coordinator.
  • Visiting students are limited to one experience per academic year.

At this time, our school is unable to provide visiting student experiences to international students. 

EVMS School of Health Professions Visiting Students

Our school offers visiting student experiences to a variety of students across many of the health professions. All non-MD/DO visiting students are required to complete the Visiting Student Application and Health Requirements Form.  

Please send the completed application, health requirements form, and all supporting application materials (see above) to VisitingStudents@evms.edu in order to be considered for an experience here. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Application process and timeline

Applicants must apply at least 45 days PRIOR to the requested start of the experience. All learning experience requests must receive multiple levels of approval before an offer can be extended. This is completed internally, once we have we have verified that your application meets the eligibility requirements. Please do not email departments directly for application status updates. Only complete applications will be reviewed. Upon receipt, applications will be reviewed and a decision rendered as quickly as possible. Our students hold first priority for all learning experiences.

Within 10 days of acceptance, a visiting student fee of $150 will be due, in addition to various health system compliance requirements which vary by experience. 

MD/DO Visiting Students

All visiting MD/DO students must apply through the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) system. Up to four weeks of electives may be taken by visiting fourth-year students. Most electives are four weeks in duration, on a fixed block schedule. The electives are not open to third-year students.

For the 2024-2025 academic year, the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) Elective Catalog will open on February 15, 2024. For most electives, notifications will be given as soon as possible after May 1, 2024. Our students hold first priority for all electives. 

Application process and timeline

Applicants must apply through VSLO, at least 60 days PRIOR to the start of the rotation. Only complete applications will be reviewed.

All elective requests must receive departmental approval before an offer can be extended. This is completed internally, once we have we have verified that your application meets the eligibility requirements. Please do not email departments directly for application status updates. Any communication outside of VSLO is not considered an official request for an elective or confirmed placement in an elective. After a decision has been made, the Visiting Student Coordinator will notify applicants in VSLO of their acceptance or denial.

Within 10 days from the date your acceptance notification is sent, you must accept or decline the offer in VSLO.

Within 3-5 days of your acceptance, you will receive a welcome letter via email from the Visiting Students Coordinator. This email will provide further instructions regarding completing the post-decision requirements in VSLO before your rotation begins.

At least 30 days PRIOR to the start of the rotation, payment of the visiting student fee of $200 and all VSLO post-decision requirements must be received (further instructions included in welcome letter). This documentation should be uploaded into your VSLO application:

Please note that your rotation is “confirmed” on our end once you have accepted the offer in VSLO, however, your application status in VSLO will not be set to “Offered Confirmed” until you have completed, and we have reviewed your post-decision requirements documentation.

2024-2025 Elective Rotation Schedule for visiting students

  • Session 1: June 3, 2024 – June 28, 2024
  • Session 2: July 1, 2024 – July 26, 2024
  • Session 3: July 29, 2024 – August 23, 2024
  • Session 4: August 26, 2024 – September 20, 2024
  • Session 5: September 23, 2024 – October 18, 2024
  • Session 6: October 21, 2024 – November 15, 2024
  • Session 7: November 18, 2024 – December 20, 2024 (Thanksgiving Break: November 25-29, 2024)
  • Session 8: February 24, 2025 – March 21, 2025
  • Session 9: January 27, 2025 – February 21, 2025
  • Session 10: February 24, 2025 – March 21, 2025

Visiting students must follow the Session schedule.
