You can earn American Medical Association (AMA) PRA Category 1 Credit by engaging in new learning intended to make you a better educator and then applying your new learning to teaching medical students, residents and fellows. CME credit recognizes how your learning changed your teaching.

Learning associated with teaching encourages your own professional development as a medical educator.

Learning from Teaching credit may be earned from a variety of interactions. Types of teaching activities include but are not limited to formal presentations to medical students, residents; development of cases, clinical problems; supervising clinical or simulated activities; instruction on clinical or other skills; assessing learner performance (clinical or simulation settings); mentoring QI or PI projects; and mentoring of scholarly activities. Please submit only one form per learning period.

Guidelines for Requesting Learning from Teaching Credit

  • Physicians with a faculty appointment to Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences Eastern Virginia Medical School at Old Dominion University may be awarded AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ for learning associated with teaching medical student, residents, and fellows.
  • Activity must be accredited by LCME, ACGME or CME to be awarded AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ for the learning associated with teaching medical students, residents, and/or fellows in that activity.
  • This does not apply to teaching Physician Assistants or other health professions students.
  • If you teach the same content more than once, even to a different audience, you may claim credit only once. If you undertake new learning, even on a previous topic, that becomes a “new” learning/teaching combination eligible for credit.
  • There must be new learning acquired by the physician in preparation for the teaching activity to claim CME credit for the teaching activity.
  • Physician time spent on a teaching activity in which no new knowledge was acquired in preparation for that activity cannot be claimed as CME credit for learning from teaching.
  • Credit awarded is based on time spent on the teaching activity, not in time spent acquiring new knowledge in preparation for the teaching activity.
  • Credit awarded will be in a 2:1 ratio, with 2 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ awarded for every 1 hour spent in the teaching activity.
  • Physicians may not submit or receive credit for any teaching activity in which they have a financial/commercial conflict of interest.
  • The CME office may request documentation of teaching time, such as a syllabus or rotation schedule, or verification from the Course Director, Program Director, Clerkship Director, Chair, Division Chief or designee.

How to Receive Credit

Complete and submit the Learning from Teaching Form within 30 days of the end of the activity.

Report only teaching time; do not include your learning time. The CME office will calculate the amount of credit you will be awarded by doubling the teaching time and then rounding to the nearest quarter-hour. Credit will appear in your EVMS at ODU CME transcript.
