These terms are designed to help you understand what AAMC terms mean within an EVMS context.

Observed History and Physical

Students are observed performing a partial or complete history and physical in every clerkship. You may recall completing this required experience with a resident or faculty observer in each clerkship and logging this in your student activity log.

Mid-clerkship feedback

There is a required mid-clerkship formative feedback process session with the clerkship director (or co-director) in every clerkship.

What if the school does not offer all clerkships listed (i.e., Neurology)?

Students have the option of skipping questions if the school did not offer a required clerkship in a certain specialty.

Who does “Office of the Dean of Students”/Associate Dean of Students” refer to?

The deans in the Office of Student Affairs are Dr. Allison Knight (Assistant Vice Dean for Student Affairs), and Ms. Melissa Scott (Assistant Dean for Student Affairs).

Who does “Office of the Dean for Educational Programs”/ Curricular Affairs” refer to?

The Education/Curricular Affairs Deans are Dr. Ronald Flenner (Vice Dean for Academic Affairs), Dr. Brooke Hooper (Assistant Vice Dean for Clinical Education), and Dr. Mily Kannarkat (Assistant Vice Dean for Preclinical Education).

Who provides academic counseling?

The AAMC defines academic counseling as the process between the medical student and an academic advisor of reviewing the services and policies of the institution, discussing educational and career plans, and making appropriate course selections. At EVMS, academic counseling is provided by the Academic Development team within the Office of Student Affairs, Dr. Allison Knight (Assistant Vice Dean for Student Affairs), Dr. Daniel St. John (Director of Academic Development), Dr. Lindsay Meyers (Assistant Director of Academic Development), and Dr. Eushekia Hewitt (Academic Development Counselor/Writing Coach).

Who provides personal counseling?

The AAMC defines personal counseling as counseling on a small-group or individual basis for students expressing difficulties dealing with relationships, personal concerns, or normal developmental tasks; this includes assisting students in identifying problems, causes, alternatives, and possible consequences to initiate appropriate action. At EVMS, Dr. Richard Handel (Director of EVMS Student Mental Health Program) provides personal counseling.

What is “overall debt management counseling”?

This refers to the one-on-one sessions with the counselors at the Office of Financial Aid, and to the informational programs hosted by that office.

What is included in “career planning services”?

Career planning services include preclinical, clinical, and elective phase advising services offered by the Office of Career Advising. Programs include specialty lunches, Run Up to Residency, Making Your Match newsletters, CV workshops, Career Exploration Clerkship, and one-on-one meetings.
