The IVIS Lumina is a non-invasive in vivo imaging system for small animals, with fluorescence, bioluminescence, X-ray and visible light imaging capabilities. It is available to all researchers through user fees.
The IVIS Lumina XR (Caliper Life Sciences, Inc., Hopkinton, MA) is a sophisticated instrument that is used to track bioluminescent and fluorescent signals in small animals. This particular imaging system has the capacity to capture up to two bioluminescent and three fluorescent signals, and the machine can also generate X-ray images. These multimodality readouts can then be compiled to give an anatomical overlay depicting where a specific biological activity has been localized in the experimental subjects. Although capable of performing sophisticated, complex and multifunctional studies, the IVIS Lumina XR remains the most cost-effective and user-friendly system to generate this type of real-time optical data in live animals.
The "Living Image 4.0" software is able to track bioluminescent and/or fluorescent signals along with anatomical information, allowing detailed renderings to be made from signals that originate within the body/tissues/cells of a test animal.
Some of the areas where the IVIS imager can be used include the study of cancer metastasis, diabetes progression, sleep and immune function, host defense and pathogen infections, among others.
