About the IACUC
The IACUC has the authority to oversee all research involving the utilization of animals. This includes reviewing protocols, modifications to protocols, ensuring staff potentially exposed to animals are trained, providing adequate veterinary care, supporting the occupational health program, reviewing animal related noncompliance, making recommendations to the Institutional Official, suspending activities, ensuring animal husbandry practices are satisfactory, reviewing the animal program semi-annually and inspecting animal use areas semi-annually. The IACUC must review all research projects, proposed for NIH funding, prior to their award.
Meeting Information
IACUC meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month (exceptions may occur). The IACUC meeting is a closed meeting and is not open to attendance by visitors. A visitor wishing to attend a meeting should send a letter to the Chair and Office of Research that includes a rationale for attending a meeting. The Committee decides whether to allow a visitor to attend on a case-by-case basis. Visitors are required to sign a confidentiality agreement.

Accreditation and Assurances
The EVMS IACUC has an Assurance on file with the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) for the use of animals in research. In addition, the EVMS Division of Comparative Medicine is certified and monitored by the USDA for registered research facilities. The EVMS Animal Program is accredited by a voluntary federal accrediting agency, the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, International (AAALAC).
