Are you one of the 9 million Americans who don't know they have diabetes?

  • Approximately 9.3% of the population has diabetes.
  • An estimated 86 million Americans aged 20 years or older have been diagnosed with prediabetes.
  • Compared with other groups, non-Hispanic white children and adolescents had the highest rate of new cases of type 1 diabetes.
  • Although uncommon, adolescent type 2 diabetes cases are more frequent among American Indians, African-Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, Asians, and Pacific Islanders.

Common symptoms of diabetes

There are 3 types of the diabetes: Type 1, Type 2 and gestational. You may be diabetic if you're having any of the following symptoms:

  • Frequent urination
  • Unusual thirst
  • Irritability
  • Tingling or numbness in legs, feet or fingers
  • Extreme hunger
  • Rapid weight loss
  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Blurred vision or any change in sight
  • Drowsiness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Frequent skin infections or itchy skin
  • Slow healing of cuts and bruises
