Are you one of the 9 million Americans who don't know they have diabetes?
- Approximately 9.3% of the population has diabetes.
- An estimated 86 million Americans aged 20 years or older have been diagnosed with prediabetes.
- Compared with other groups, non-Hispanic white children and adolescents had the highest rate of new cases of type 1 diabetes.
- Although uncommon, adolescent type 2 diabetes cases are more frequent among American Indians, African-Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, Asians, and Pacific Islanders.
Common symptoms of diabetes
There are 3 types of the diabetes: Type 1, Type 2 and gestational. You may be diabetic if you're having any of the following symptoms:
- Frequent urination
- Unusual thirst
- Irritability
- Tingling or numbness in legs, feet or fingers
- Extreme hunger
- Rapid weight loss
- Weakness and fatigue
- Blurred vision or any change in sight
- Drowsiness
- Nausea and vomiting
- Frequent skin infections or itchy skin
- Slow healing of cuts and bruises
