Dr. Burgess obtained her MD degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School in 2009.  She stayed at EVMS for her General Surgery residency and completed her Surgical Critical Care Fellowship in the middle of residency.  She joined the EVMS faculty in 2015 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2020.  Her clinical interests include acute care surgery, robotic and laparoscopic general surgery.

Dr. Burgess is the Program Director for the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship and the co-director of the 3rd year surgical clerkship.  She has been the recipient of both the Sir William Osler Award for Excellence in Teaching as well as the Crystal Apple Teaching Award.  Her research interests include trauma quality improvement and geriatric outcomes in acute care surgery.  She is a member of American College of Surgeons Patient Education Committee and an active member in the Young Fellows Association of the College.  She currently serves on the CME Committee of the Southeastern Surgical Association.  Locally, she serves as the chair of the Disaster Committee at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Her interests outside of medicine include spending time with her husband and three young boys, enjoying the outdoors, trying new restaurants and exercising.
