Why I Chose EVMS: Although the integrated plastic surgery program is brand new, EVMS is a historical powerhouse in plastic surgery. This tradition continues with the strong faculty at EVMS. They have demonstrate a passion to mentor and prepare residents to excel in our careers, which is integral to ensuring the success of the program as a whole and that of each individual resident. While establishing a new residency poses a challenge for the trainees, it is an exciting opportunity to pioneer the program. If the breadth and quality of training at EVMS in all specialties – especially in general, trauma and the other surgical fields – is any indication, the plastic surgery program has a strong foundation to build upon.

My passion for plastic surgery began after performing cases for trauma reconstruction, especially those requiring tissue transfer. The creativity and innovative thinking that goes into using the patient's own tissue for coverage of large or disfiguring wounds was both thought-provoking and exciting. And the technical skills required to take tissue from one area of the body, place it in a different location and ensure it remained viable is the exact reason why surgery is something I've wanted to do since before medical school. Finally, the satisfaction and gratitude from patients is what drew me to medicine in the first place and in a field such as plastic surgery, this gratitude can be immense. The patient interaction is what I thrive upon and I strive to provide each patient with optimal care, as if they were my own family.
