Instructor Renewals

Biannually, the AHA requires instructors to renew their instructorship for each discipline that they hold certification. The cost to renew is $50 per instructor per discipline, unless otherwise specified.

It is required that the instructor teaches a minimum of four (4) classes within the current certification period.  To successfully renew instructorship, it is also required that the instructor teach a course while being monitored by a TCLS Training Faculty (TF) and demonstrate that (s)he meets the minimum instructor qualifications.  The process is outlined below:

  1. The AHA instructor will complete the Instructor/TF Renewal Checklist form, identifying the discipline for renewal and the TF requested to monitor. Submission of the “Instructor/TF Renewal Checklist” will alert the requested TF via automated email.
    • If requesting to be monitored at EVMS, please select a monitoring date from the calendar. This option is a $50 fee paid to TCLS.
    • If making arrangements directly with the Training Faculty (TF), please enter their email address as well. This will generate an automated email to the selected TF, allowing direct communication between the instructor and TF to identify a monitoring date.  For reference, a list of TF with contact information is provided on the TCLS website.
  2. The AHA instructor will teach a course for the discipline identified, while the TF monitors the course and completes the “Instructor Monitoring Tool” form. Through the use of this form, the TF will/will not recommend the instructor for renewal.
  3. AHA instructors recommended for renewal by the TF will complete the “Instructor Monitoring Acknowledgement” form.
  4. After verifying the instructor’s profile, the TCLS Life Support Coordinator will notify the instructor via email and include instructions for acquiring the new instructor card.

The fee for each instructor renewal is $50/instructor/discipline unless otherwise specified.  This fee includes the cost of the instructor card and associated administrative fees.

Instructor Transfer/Alignment Process

To align with TCLS, the instructor must teach a course while being monitored by a TCLS Training Faculty (TF) and demonstrate that (s)he meets the minimum instructor qualifications. The cost to align is $50.

To request to align with TCLS after an instructor completing an AHA Instructor course, or to transfer your instructor alignment to TCLS:

  1. The AHA instructor will complete the Instructor/TF Renewal Checklist form, identifying the discipline for renewal and the TF requested to monitor. Submission of the “Instructor/TF Renewal Checklist” will alert the requested TF. A copy of your current AHA Instructor card will need to be provided.
  2. If requesting to be monitored at EVMS, please select a monitoring date from the calendar.
  3. Training Center Coordinator (TCC) will provide a copy of the AHA Instructor Records Transfer Request form to the instructor candidate for completion.
    • The TCC will complete Section 1 and send it along to the instructor.
    • The instructor will complete Section 2 and send it to their current TCC.
    • The current TCC will complete Section 3 and forward a copy to TCLS with a copy of the instructor records.
  4. Request to transfer the Instructor ID by logging into the AHA Instructor Network and submitting a request to the AHA.

Instructor FAQs

Automatic extensions were not issued by the AHA after October 2020.  However, if an instructor was unable to meet the renewal requirements due to COVID19, please email lifesupport@evms.edu for assistance and additional details related to the potential of an extension.

ShopCPR.heart.org is the only authorized distributor of AHA materials.

The AHA doesn’t require a particular vendor for procuring supplies/equipment/manikins, but rather that they meet their functionality requirements.  The course equipment requirements are listed in the PAM on page 37.

We do not loan out our equipment.

Email the necessary corrections to lifesupport@evms.edu as soon as possible. Our staff will make changes for you, but please note, that if the course fee is different between the two course eCards, the instructor will be invoiced for the difference.  If students have already claimed the incorrect eCards, the instructor is responsible for covering the costs of both eCards.

Effective June 2018, eCards are required for all participants. All participants must have a unique email address to receive their eCard.

Our goal is to process all rosters within two business days of submission. Missing information such as student email addresses and incorrect information like insufficient course duration are common errors that will delay roster processing.

Once you receive the confirmation email that the roster you submitted was processed:

  • Log in to the AHA Instructor Network
  • Click 'eCards' on the left-hand menu
  • Click the 'Manage eCards' drop-down menu toward the top of the page
  • Click 'Search eCards'
  • Set the criteria to search by student name, email, course and the course date range for the eCards in question
  • Click the 'Search' button

The results matching your criteria will display at the bottom of the page.

Yes, instructors can review evaluations by following these instructions on the AHA Instructor Network:

  • Log in to the AHA Instructor Network
  • Click 'eCards' on the left-hand menu
  • Click the 'Manage eCards' drop-down menu toward the top of the page
  • Click 'Reports'
  • Select 'Survey Responses'
  • Set the criteria to search by course, discipline and date range
  • Click the 'Search' button

Your survey results will be displayed at the bottom of the page.

You may start the process by completing our instructor renewal form. For selecting a Training Faculty to monitor a course, please refer to the list of our TCF.

For a walkthrough of the entire instructor renewal process, please watch this short video.

When you complete the instructor renewal request form, the Training Faculty that you indicated is emailed with a link to complete your monitoring form.
