Director selected for Junior Clinical Investigator Program
Juliana Gevaerd Martins, MD, has been selected as the inaugural Director of the Junior Clinical Investigator Program (JCIP), a comprehensive three-year training program that will provide career advancement opportunities for junior clinical faculty.
Dr. Martins is an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at EVMS specializing in maternal-fetal medicine. With an educational background that includes fellowships in maternal-fetal medicine at EVMS and ultrasound/fetal medicine in Brazil, Dr. Martins has dedicated her career to advancing the field of obstetric and gynecological ultrasound.
Since joining EVMS in 2020, Dr. Martins has taken on multiple leadership roles, including Director of Ultrasound. She is renowned for her expertise in high-risk obstetrics, particularly fetal growth restriction and ultrasound diagnostics, which has led to numerous peer-reviewed publications and national and international presentations.
Dr. Martins is actively involved in professional service, serving as a liaison for the Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine Publications Committee and the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM). She also plays a critical role in education, mentoring residents and fellows in both clinical and research capacities. Her work has been recognized with several honors, including membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and multiple awards for her compassion and excellence in maternal-fetal medicine.
A joint effort of EVMS and Sentara, the JCIP is a 24- to 36-month program that will combine formal and individualized training based on the professional aspirations and career goals of participating junior clinical faculty members. All training will be under the guidance of a dedicated primary mentor and a group of secondary mentors.
The program is designed for individuals who are beginning in their specialty and are already hired, or are eligible to be hired, as faculty. Each JCIP fellow will receive up to $50K annually up to three years to support research and professional development.
