Thanksgiving meal

The goal of eating healthy tends to fly out the window when it comes to the holidays, but it doesn’t have to. You can still enjoy a delicious meal without consuming more than a day’s worth of calories in one sitting.

EVMS dietitian Phyllis Woodson, MS, RD, CDE, has several ideas to help shave almost 1,600 calories from your next holiday feast.

She says the best place to start is with the amount of foods you’re serving. Cutting out fatty meats like ham and beef could eliminate more than 500 calories.

Instead of cheese and crackers or nuts, she recommends shrimp cocktail as an appetizer.

Reducing portion size also makes a big difference. Having one roll instead of two or a quarter cup of dressing can slash hundreds of calories.
