A crowd of EVMS students hold white coats during a ceremony

Eastern Virginia Medical School is one of the top 10 medical schools in the Southeast Region, according to new rankings.

College Factual’s "2023 Best Medicine Schools in the Southeast Region" places EVMS alongside the nation’s top institutions, recognizing its high-quality curricula and degree value among its peers.

"This recognition underscores what we already know about EVMS and the community we have created among our faculty, staff, students, alumni and supporters," says Alfred Abuhamad, MD, President, Provost and Dean of the School of Medicine. "I want to acknowledge and express my thanks to everyone who contributes their time and talent to making EVMS such an excellent source of education, care and research."

To calculate rankings of master’s and doctoral degrees, College Factual combines degree-level rankings, weighting them by the number of degrees awarded at each level. The methodology also factors in accreditation, student body caliber (test scores and diversity), market demand, degree offerings, educational resources, degree completion, and post-graduation debt and earnings.

EVMS was also recognized in several additional categories by College Factual, including Best Biological & Biomedical Sciences Schools, Best Health & Medical Administrative Services Schools, and Most Focused Colleges for Health Professions. View the complete rankings.

EVMS is one of the only medical schools in the country founded and funded by a grassroots effort. Many who are educated at EVMS choose to stay and practice in the region, and the school’s impressive portfolio of teaching affiliates includes the region’s foremost medical centers and approximately 150 private practices around Hampton Roads.

The collaborative culture at EVMS draws like-minded students and faculty from all over the country and attracts highly qualified healthcare professionals whose wide range of specialty care might otherwise be beyond reach. And the research conducted by EVMS faculty is driven by the needs of the community.

EVMS has grown to 1,320 medical and health professions students in the 2022-2023 academic year. It ranks among the top 20 non-federal employers in the region and has an annual economic imprint of more than $1.2 billion in Hampton Roads.

The school remains at the forefront of innovation in workforce development for the health sector, with a vision for a community where all people experience improved health outcomes and have access to high quality, compassionate care.
