ER physician recognized for dedication to diversity
The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) recently awarded Bruce Lo, MD, Professor of Emergency Medicine, the Champion in Diversity and Inclusion Award.
The award is given to a physician who demonstrates a commitment to the promotion of diverse leadership and membership, as well as initiatives related to mentorship, programmatic activities and professional development.
Trisha Anest, MD, MPH, Medical Director of the Emergency Department at Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital, nominated Dr. Lo for the honor.
“I am one of many women who have gained access to leadership within Virginia ACEP and national ACEP thanks to this unique fellowship that Dr. Lo has supported,” Dr. Anest says. “His work has swelled the ranks of VACEP with young and diverse members and is a testament to that commitment in action."
“As President of the Virginia College of Emergency Physicians for the past two years, Dr. Lo has made it one of his goals to get young Emergency Medicine physicians involved with Virginia ACEP,” says Francis Counselman, MD (MD ’83, Emergency Medicine Residency ’86), the Chidester Endowed Chair of Emergency Medicine and Professor and Chair of Emergency Medicine. He actively works to recruit them for active projects and for positions on the Virginia ACEP board of directors and other leadership positions, Dr. Counselman says.
ACEP was founded in 1968 by a small group of physicians who set out to educate and train physicians in emergency medicine to provide quality emergency care in the nation’s hospitals. Today, ACEP represents more than 38,000 emergency physicians, emergency medicine residents and medical students.
