Gary Ohanian and Michael Kopec

The EVMS Family Medicine Residency Program will be under new leadership effective April 1.

Karo “Gary” Ohanian, MD (MD ’16), will take over as Program Director. He replaces John Snellings, MD (MD ’10, Family Medicine/Internal Medicine Residency ‘14), Associate Professor of Family and Community Medicine, who has been appointed Chair of Family and Community Medicine.

Dr. Ohanian completed his family medicine residency training in 2019 at EVMS Portsmouth Family Medicine and joined the EVMS Family Medicine faculty later that year. He has served as Associate Program Director since 2020 and completed the University of North Carolina’s Faculty Development Fellowship in 2023.

Michael Kopec, MD, FAAFP, will become Associate Program Director. Dr. Kopec completed his family medicine residency training in 2012 at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and an advanced obstetrics fellowship in 2013 at Swedish Family Medicine in Seattle, Washington. He joined the EVMS Family Medicine faculty in October 2021, completed a faculty development fellowship at the University of Washington in 2018 and is currently an ADFM LEADS Fellow.
