Angela Hogan and Todd Mahr

Angela Hogan, MD, Professor of Pediatrics at EVMS and pediatric allergist and immunologist at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, has received the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Jerome Glaser Distinguished Service Award, which is presented annually in recognition of outstanding service in the field of pediatric allergy.

“I am honored, humbled and grateful for this award,” says Dr. Hogan. “Picasso said the meaning of life is to find your gift, and the purpose of life is to give it away. I was given the gifts of teaching and encouraging others. I am glad I had the opportunity to share my gifts.”

Dr. Hogan is the 20th recipient of the prestigious award, presented during the AAP National Conference & Exhibition Oct. 20-24 in Washington, D.C. She has been an active member of the AAP since 1987, the Section on Allergy and Immunology since 2004 and the AAP Virginia Chapter since 1998. She has given numerous talks on a range of allergy and asthma topics through AAP and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Visiting Professor Programs, as well as educating trainees, community physicians and school nurses at the local and regional levels. Her passion for teaching is also showcased by her participation as a speaker at AAP Practical Pediatrics Courses since 2011. More recently, Dr. Hogan has served as a member of the AAP National Conference & Exhibition Planning Group (June 2019 through December 2025), where she has been a strong advocate for Allergy and Immunology educational programming.

“Angela is an established and a very popular speaker for the AAP, discussing many topics within Allergy and Immunology, especially food allergy,” says C.W. Gowen, MD, EVMS Foundation Chair in Pediatrics, Professor and Chair of Pediatrics at EVMS and Senior Vice-President for Academic Affairs at CHKD. “She is an excellent clinician and teacher for faculty, residents and students. She is most deserving of this great honor.”

Dr. Hogan is passionate about community education in asthma and food allergies and emphasizes the importance of not only correctly diagnosing food allergies, but of understanding the impact such a diagnosis has on a child and family. She formed the Food Allergy Support Group of Tidewater (FASGOT), which provides educational support for healthcare providers, schools and families. She is involved extensively in the education of school nurses and has organized outreach programs for community physicians.
