Laboratory for Validation & Verification of Emerging Simulators

The Laboratory for Investigation, Validation and Verification of Emerging Simulators, or LIVES, is a test and evaluation laboratory for medical modeling and simulation devices, such as surgical simulators, mannequins, and computer-based environments. The goal of LIVES is to promote the development of medical models and simulators that will improve patient safety as well as education for the medical and health professions.

LIVES is a partnership of academia, government, and industry that assesses new medical simulators from the perspectives of a number of disciplines, including:

  • Human factors psychology
  • Clinical medicine
  • Medical education
  • Bioengineering
  • Computer science
  • Modeling and simulation
  • Visualization

The goals of LIVES are to:

  • Develop standardized approaches and metrics for simulator assessment
  • Asess the human-computer interfaces for usability and promotion of safe and effective training of medical procedures
  • Ensure the interoperability of simulators with existing platforms

LIVES can be thought of as a one-stop shop for assessment and critique throughout every stage of the simulator development process.
