The School of Health Professions recently announced two leadership changes taking effect this summer.

Brian Martin, PhD, MBA, was appointed Senior Associate Dean July 1. In August, Kelly Cox will assume the role of Associate Dean for Integration Management.

Both of these roles are essential to the continuing growth and development of EVMS, says C. Donald Combs, PhD, Vice President and Dean of the School of Health Professions.

“Dr. Martin and Mrs. Cox both bring exceptional knowledge, experience and dedication to their respective roles,” Dr. Combs says.

Dr. Martin provides essential administrative leadership within the School of Health Professions while also serving as Program Director for the Master of Public Health Program. Recently, his responsibilities have significantly expanded to include leading the operational planning for EVMS’ role within the emerging ONE School of Public Health initiative, a joint effort with Old Dominion University and Norfolk State University.

Dr. Martin joined EVMS in 2014 as Associate Professor and Director of the CEPH-accredited EVMS-ODU Master of Public Health (MPH) program. He was promoted to Professor in 2017 and earned tenure in 2022.  Dr. Martin assumed added responsibilities as the Associate Dean for Administration in the School of Health Professions as Director of the Doctor of Health Sciences Program in 2018.

Dr. Martin has taught undergraduate and graduate students, provided service activities and conducted research in the area of health services administration for more than 20 years. His research interests include access to care, financing healthcare services, cost/benefit analysis and healthcare workforce development.

Prior to entering academia, Dr. Martin performed strategic planning and new business development in a large, non-profit, tertiary care, teaching hospital. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and his master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of South Carolina School of Business, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Health Services Research and Administration from the University of South Carolina School of Public Health.

Mrs. Cox joined EVMS in 1989 and has deep knowledge of the EVMS and EVMS Medical Group administration. In her new role, Mrs. Cox will work closely with the membership of the functional planning teams and senior management to develop operational plans for a proposed integration with ODU.

She has held several leadership positions during her time at EVMS. In her current role as Associate Chair of Administration and Finance with the Department of OB/GYN, Mrs. Cox has a successful record of strategic planning and business development with extensive experience in planning and executing project plans and motivating, cultivating and maintaining sustainable relationships within EVMS and EVMS Medical Group as well as with community partners.

Prior to her Associate Chair role in OB/GYN, she was the EVMS Medical Group Administrator for more than 10 years during which time her responsibilities included clinical growth business planning, regulatory compliance, process planning and optimization and contract management.

Mrs. Cox also served on several governance and finance committees, as well as operational and clinical subcommittees. She brings to the role of Associate Dean of Integration Management extensive experience in unearthing new opportunities and developing solutions that optimize outcomes, expedite processes and promote engagement.
