Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam reappointed L.D. Britt, MD, MPH, to the University of Virginia Board of Visitors.

Dr. Britt, the Edward J. Brickhouse Chair in Surgery, the Henry Ford Professor of Surgery, and Chair and Professor of Surgery at EVMS, was originally appointed in 2014.

Dr. Britt is a UVA alumnus. After earning his bachelor’s degree from the institution, he graduated from the Political Leaders Program at UVA’s Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership. 

He then earned a medical degree Harvard Medical School and Master of Public Health degree from the Harvard School of Public Health.

Dr. Britt also is a former rector and member of the Norfolk State University Board of Visitors and past president of the American College of Surgeons.

Among his numerous awards and accolades was his 2016 election to the National Academy of Medicine, considered one of the highest honors in medicine.

Dr. Britt recently received a $2.5 million R01 grant from the National Institutes of Health that will fund the first national effort to quantify surgical disparities.
