The EVMS-Sentara Healthcare Analytics and Delivery Science Institute (HADSI) has partnered with the Healthy Living Center in Norfolk for Healthy Eating and Living Spiritually (HEALS), a 12-month behavioral modification hypertension management program aimed at reducing health disparities and improving outcomes among higher-risk populations.

“HEALS has given the community of African Americans [participating in the program] the opportunity to open their door and let the light shine in,” says Olivia Newby, DNP, Director of the Healthy Living Center.

Sylvia Nowling, Lifestyle Coach at the Healthy Living Center, says part of the appeal of the program is that it focuses on small, incremental changes to improve health.

“We’re encouraging participants to look at the way we live and the things we do and how we can still enjoy our lives but make some slight alterations to make sure that as we are living our best,” says Ms. Nowling, pictured above.
