EVMS faculty, an invaluable volunteer and a key component of the school’s research enterprise were honored Feb. 26 at the annual Health Care Heroes awards ceremony sponsored by the Hampton Roads publication Inside Business.

In all, 13 of the award recipients are affiliated with EVMS. EVMS honorees were:

  • Russ Clark, a “living donor” volunteer who openly shares his own experiences as a patient to help educate students.  He received the award for Volunteer.
  • Jay Collins, MD, Professor of Surgery. He received the award for Trauma Surgeon.
  • David Dexter, MD, Assistant Professor of Clinical Surgery. He received the award for Vascular Surgeon.
  • Beaumont Hodge Jr., MD, Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine. He won the award for Internal Medicine.
  • Richard Hoefer Jr., DO, is an Assistant Profess of Clinical Surgery. He received the award for Surgical Oncologist.
  • George Hubbard II, MD, Assistant Professor of Surgery. He received the award for Thoracic Surgeon.
  • David Lieb, MD, Associate Professor of Internal Medicine. He received the award for Adult Endocrinologist.
  • Paul Marik, MBBCH, EVMS Foundation Professor in Internal Medicine and Chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. He received the award for Clinical Advancements in Health Care.
  • Shannon McCole, MD (Ophthalmology Residency ‘97), holds the EVMS Ophthalmology Professorship and Associate Professor and Chair of Ophthalmology. She received the award for Ophthalmologist.
  • Antonio Quidgley-Nevares, MD, Lydia I. Myers Endowed Professor in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Professor and Chair of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
  • Kent Reifschneider, MD, Associate Professor of Pediatrics. He received the award for Pediatrics Endocrinologist.
  • John de Triquet, MD, Associate Professor of Pediatrics. He received the award for Pediatrician.
  • EVMS Biorepository. Laurie Wellman, PhD, Director of the accredited center, accepted the award.

EVMS faculty and residents were integral members of the team for another organization, Sentara Ambulatory Care Clinic, honored at the event. Sami Tahhan, MD, Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and  Medical Director of the facility, and Jennifer Ryal, MD, Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine, have brought a cutting-edge, multidisciplinary approach to the clinic.
