Ethlyn McQueen-Gibson stands with other recipients of the Community Builders Award

One of EVMS' own has been recognized for her strong commitment to service and transforming lives through education, volunteerism, business and outreach.

Ethlyn McQueen-Gibson, DNP, MSN, Research Scholar in the EVMS Pediatrics division of Community Health and Research, was honored on June 8 with a Community Builders Award from the Hampton Roads Community Action Program.

“This award is truly humbling for me,” she says. “I enjoy rising each day and simply trying to make a difference in my community.”

The differences she’s made deserve celebration. Dr. McQueen-Gibson has practiced nursing for more than 40 years and has dedicated her career to healthcare and educating future providers. In her current role at EVMS, she is part of a multidisciplinary team conducting community-engaged research focusing on health disparities and COVID-19. Prior to EVMS, she worked at three Historically Black Colleges and Universities — Howard University, Norfolk State University and Hampton University — in addition to Sentara Health and Riverside Health System. She’s had the opportunity to watch future nurses graduate with Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees, and has proudly promoted future nurse practitioners and mentored nurses pursuing doctoral degrees.

Dr. Mc-Queen-Gibson is an active member in several professional, civic and community-based organizations, including the American Nurses Association, National Black Nurses Association, NAACP, National Urban League, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and Links Incorporated. She has also served on the boards of the Peninsula Agency on Aging, American Heart Association, Virginia Board of Nursing and the Commonwealth Health Research Board. In February 2022, she was recognized by the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities with the Humanitarian of the Year Award for her work in the community during the pandemic. Dr. Mc-Queen-Gibson is also a veteran, having served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps on active and reserve duty from 1984-2009.

“She is truly deserving of the Community Builders Award,” says Marissa Galicia-Castillo, MD, MSEd (MD'97, Internal Medicine Residency '00), who has worked closely with Dr. McQueen-Gibson in her role as Director of the Glennan Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology. “Her amazing expertise and leadership has helped us move forward in improving community understanding of dementia.”

The Hampton Roads Community Action Program has served the region for over 50 years, contributing to the economic stability and quality of life of individuals and families through programs in education, training, work experience, emergency services and housing counseling.
