Sports Medicine


EVMS Sports Medicine is a specialty within the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) department. We specialize in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries related to participating in sports and/or exercise.

Our Program

EVMS Sports Medicine offers a multidisciplinary approach to treating sports-related and musculoskeletal injuries. Our goal is to decrease pain and enhance performance without surgery. Dr. Bagares develops individualized treatment plans designed to help patients stay as active as possible at any age.

  • Shoulder and rotator cuff injuries
  • Adhesive capsulitis
  • Knee injuries
  • Stress fractures
  • Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome
  • Bursitis
  • Ankle and foot injuries
  • Wrist and elbow injuries
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Cubital tunnel syndrome
  • Tendinopathies
  • Arthritic conditions of the shoulder, hip and knee
  • Injuries of the spine (neck and back)
  • Piriformis syndrome
  • Runner’s injuries
  • Sports concussion evaluation and “return to play” determination

  • Fluoroscopic injections to the lumbar spine
    • epidural injections
    • facet and sacroiliac joint injections
    • radiofrequency neurotomy
  • Musculoskeletal ultrasound evaluation
  • Orthotic evaluation and prescription
  • Trigger point injections
  • Electrodiagnostic tests (nerve conduction/EMG)

We work closely with other physicians and health professionals, such as primary care physicians, orthopedic surgeons, athletic trainers and physical therapists to ensure the best treatment for our patients and athletes.
