Maria R. Urbano, MD
On Training Residents
I went to medical school here at EVMS, did an internship in internal medicine, and then completed my residency training here in psychiatry as well.
I was residency director in the 90’s and now assist Dr. Patel with her role. I am the outpatient psychiatrist in the department without an official “job” at the hospitals but I cross-cover and take call. So I am at Hofheimer almost all of the time and the residents know that they can stop in with questions, etc.
I also teach psychiatric interviewing to the PGY-1s which I thoroughly enjoy and it is a good opportunity for me to get to know the new residents. My favorite job is being a psychodynamic psychotherapy supervisor. Residents have little to no experience in this modality when they enter training so it is wonderful to see the “aha” moments and the “this stuff really works” surprised looks on their faces. Residents provide energy and fun to my day so in addition to the above, it is the best place to be!
