Barry Strasnick, MD, is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Eastern Virginia Medical School.  He is the Director of the EVMS Division of Otology, Neurotology and Skull Base Surgery; Director of the EVMS Hearing and Balance Center; and President of the Coalition for Hearing, Education and Research (CHEAR).

Dr. Strasnick received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.  He completed his General Surgery internship at Baylor College of Medicine and a residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of California in Los Angeles.  He completed a fellowship in Otology, Neurology, and Skull Base Surgery at the nationally acclaimed Otology Group in Nashville, Tennessee. 

Dr. Strasnick is Board Certified from the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and holds a subspecialty board certification in Neurotology/Skull Base Surgery. 

He currently serves as Chairman of the Virginia Newborn Hearing Screening Commission.  In 2010, he established the regions only preschool dedicated to instruction for hearing impaired children. 

Dr. Strasnick serves as Director of the Sentara/EVMS Skull Base Surgery Center and is responsible for the introduction of novel minimally invasive surgical techniques for a variety of brain tumors and skull based disease processes.

Dr. Strasnick serves on the Editorial Boards of a number of otolaryngology subspecialty journals.  He has authored numerous articles related to ear, hearing and balance disorders as well     as skull based tumors.  He is a frequent guest lecturer and instructor at academic medical centers and has received numerous academic and community awards for his contributions and achievements including Best Doctors in America, Top Doctors in Virginia and Hampton Roads Best Doctors.

Dr. Strasnick’s clinical interests and skills include diseases of the ear, hearing and balance system; disorders of the facial nerve, acoustic neuromas and skull base malignancies and cochlear implants.  In 1992, Dr. Strasnick created the regions first Hearing and Balance Center.  This center has grown to now treat over 3,000 patients with hearing loss and 600 patients with balance disorders each year.  In 2001, Dr. Strasnick authored legislation, mandating universal hearing testing at birth for all children in Virginia.  He has similarly assisted in the development of universal newborn hearing screening programs in all 50 states.  In 2009, Dr. Strasnick developed the OTOGRAM, a patented fully automated hearing test device which allows hearing testing in any location without the need for a soundbooth or audiologist.  Testing is now available in 12 languages and is being utilized throughout the world.  In 2010, Dr. Strasnick founded CHEAR, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the treatment of hearing impaired children and adults.
