Residents work in a variety of international environments in our fellowship.

International Emergency Medicine Fellowship

Promote global health and mitigate health disparities by training to provide quality emergency care to vulnerable populations abroad.

Broaden your horizons

During three or four trips per year, our fellows prepare for site-specific overseas work, developing knowledge and skills in culturally sensitive needs assessments, program development, implementation and evaluation. Fellows have opportunities for research, and two-year fellows pursue a Master in Public Health as part of the program.

Maintain and develop high-quality emergency medicine skills in emergency departments locally before using your skills in countries such as Ghana, Guatemala, Haiti, India, Kenya and Uganda, where past fellows have studied. Prepare to take your impact global with our fellowship.

A supportive environment

Work-life balance is important during your fellowship, and we are committed to supporting our fellows throughout their time at EVMS. Through EVMS' Wellness Works program, our residents and fellows receive the same wellness resources as our faculty and staff.

In addition, our Resident Wellness program for residents and fellows gives you access to support groups, after-hours counseling services, running clubs, leadership coaching and more.

Wellness in Emergency Medicine

Our commitment to wellness doesn't stop with EVMS' Wellness Works and GME's Resident Wellness programs for all residents and fellows. Emergency Medicine provides added support for trainees through our departmental Wellness and Resilience Committee.

Faculty members mentor one trainee at each level. Residents and fellows get to know their mentors and each other across all levels of training, attending activities such as baseball games, group dinners, ice cream socials and more.
