Surgical Assistant Program Incoming Students
Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) continually monitors, evaluates, and makes improvements to the curriculum to provide students with the best possible educational program. EVMS is committed to utilizing new and emerging learning technologies that enhance and facilitate learning opportunities for our students.
To this end, EVMS has established a computing requirement for students. The purpose of this requirement is to provide a baseline for computing needs for our students during their two years at EVMS. This requirement is based on an assessment of the learning technologies used at EVMS as well as the computing requirements of outside agencies that are an integral part of the curriculum. The basic requirements are designed to meet all of the student’s technology requirements and to provide students with as much flexibility in choosing a specific computing platform. EVMS understands that computing choices/purchases are a very personal decision and every effort has been made to be as flexible as possible with regard to setting these requirements. However, it is important to remember that certain requirements are beyond institutional control.
Accordingly, it is necessary that each incoming student have a personal laptop computer capable of running the necessary software and applications used in the curriculum. Students may choose to use their existing laptop or purchase a new laptop computer. However, the laptop computer must meet the minimum specifications provided below. In general, Netbooks, iPads, and other tablet devices will not fulfill the current minimum computing requirements. Students should not plan on using these devices.
It is important to note that the EVMS Network Center can only provide limited support for personal laptops. The Network Center will provide support for installing the necessary software to ensure compliance with and access to the EVMS wireless network access. The Network Center will not provide support or troubleshooting for hardware or software/application support. All support, troubleshooting, and updates are the student’s responsibility. Therefore, purchase of a service plan for your computer is required. Students will be receiving more detailed information about student expectations and responsibilities prior to matriculation.
The Office of Financial Aid offers students a method of increasing their cost of attendance budget in order to assist in reimbursement of their laptop purchase, if needed. The Budget Adjustment Allowances policy provides in part:
Personal Computer – Adjustments for the purchase of a personal computer (PDA excluded) will be made once during the student’s academic career, not to exceed $2,200. Expenses will be added to the cost of the student budget upon receipt of a written request from the student and documentation of the expenses.
