Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)

ACGME LogoThe Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) is a private professional organization responsible for the accreditation of about 9,500 residency education programs. Residency education is the period of clinical education in a medical specialty that follows graduation from medical school and prepares physicians for the independent practice of medicine. The ACGME's volume of accredited programs makes it one of the largest private accrediting agencies in the country, if not the world.

ACGME is charged with setting and enforcing standards for supervision and resident duty hours for graduate medical education. All ACGME-accredited programs must comply with the ACGME Common Program Requirements, which include the resident duty hour rules, and their Specialty Specific Duty Hours Definitions.

New Innovations

New Innovations began in 1995 as a simple solution to help one program director and friend track one requirement. Since that time, New Innovations has evolved into a Residency Management Suite that "unifies program and resident information into a centralized data warehouse. It allows users to complete tasks historically performed using multiple, incompatible methods through a single common interface."

Since 2013, Graduate Medical Education has mandated the use of New Innovations Residency Management Suite as a way to institutionally provide the required oversight of all sponsored programs. It is much more reasonable to compare apples to apples than to compare apples to oranges to pears.
