The Life of an EVMS Pediatric Resident

Resident Roles by Training Level


  • functions as the patient’s primary physician
  • responsible for all aspects of the patient’s care under direct supervision from a senior resident and the attending physician
  • assigned a continuity clinic attending as their advisor and an upper level resident as a mentor.


  • assumes an increasing level of responsibility for patient management with introduction of teaching and team leadership
  • receive multiple months to choose individualized curriculum in areas of interest
  • dedicated faculty physicians are available as subspecialty advisors
  • program leadership will gladly facilitate identifying subspecialty advisors for residents in their areas of interest


  • gain extensive experience as teachers and supervisors
  • multiple months are available to pursue individualized curriculum tailored to each senior resident’s career path


Annual Resident Events & Social Activities

American Rover cruise (photos)
New interns interact with their class in addition to other current residents, program leadership and attendings during an evening boat ride along the Elizabeth river. (Dinner provided)

Intern graduation (photos)
A chance for rising second years to celebrate and reflect on completing their intern year in the presence of their spouse/significant other and program leadership. (Dinner and beverages provided)

DWL charity golf tournament (photos)
Students, residents, faculty and community members play a four person traditional scramble tournament on the beautiful greens of the Bide-A-Wee course in Portsmouth, VA; proceeds go to the EVMS Pediatric Residency at CHKD "Fund for Haiti" (Meals and beverages provided)

Donald Lewis Pediatric Update Conference in Williamsburg, VA
Accredited pediatric course designed to extend medical knowledge and skills by reviewing state-of-the-art diagnoses and treatments in general and subspecialty pediatrics; features plenary sessions, breakout groups and poster displays/presentations not to mention free-time to enjoy the gorgeous historic city of Williamsburg during the Fall.  The weekend concludes with an Allplay competition (hybrid jeopardy-style game) amongst teams representing all residency training programs in Virginia. Fall resident retreat (photos)
Residents from all classes travel to Kingsmill Resort (Williamsburg, VA) for a weekend to engage in fun activities centered around team-building, communication, professionalism, conflict resolution, teaching and feedback.  Spouses/significant others and children are invited to attend.  Saturday evening's longstanding tradition has been a themed dinner complete with hysterical videos/skits performed by each residency class.  (Meals and beverages provided)


Match day celebration and happy-hour
A casual gathering within a local restaurant, this convivial event celebrates residents newly matched to our program while also honoring the hard-work invested by current residents, faculty and staff during the interview season.  (Food and beverages provided)

Pediatrics day at the zoo (photos)
EVMS Department of Pediatrics Faculty, Staff, Residents and their families enjoy an afternoon of animal exhibits, inflatable rides, air-brush art and live-music at the Norfolk Zoo. (Lunch & ice-cream provided)

Senior resident graduation event (photos)
A mid-June event celebrating the accomplishments of our graduating senior residents; attended by Faculty mentors, Program Leadership, residents and thier families. (Food and beverages provided)
