    • Why I chose the Combined Program? I chose the Combined FM/IM Program to add depth to my medical knowledge. Family medicine is one of the broadest specialties but ironically has the shortest training! Patients can present to the office in any stage of any disease, from life threatening emergencies that need ICU care, to conditions that can be easily treated in the office like asthma. With more and more focus on cost savings and efficient medical care, I wanted to be able to properly triage the patients that need consultations or higher levels of care from the ones I can manage myself. Now in my final year of the program, I feel truly prepared to do this since our training includes a rigorous inpatient internal medicine experience, combined with the well rounded, holistic, continuity training in the family medicine clinic. Our program also has more elective time with specialist attendings than most traditional family medicine programs. This again translates into more comfort with workups in the clinic. This program was the right choice for me, and I would also recommend it for anyone wishing to practice rural medicine or traditional inpatient-outpatient medicine.
