    • Why I chose the Combined Program?  In medical school, I was mostly interested in Internal Medicine. I enjoyed taking care of children - as long as they were not "too sick" - in the intensive care unit, on ventilators, etc. I enjoyed women's health as well but did not want to do a residency in obstetrics. At that time, my sister (a graduate from EVMS) informed me of the EVMS Combined FM-IM program. I was instantly intrigued. I didn't want to do a Med-Peds program - which would give me pediatric experience - but at the cost of having to learn critical care pediatrics. Instead, the Combined program would give me the skills to function as a good family medicine and internal medicine doctor, with the opportunities to pursue fellowships in both fields. Incidentally, in the middle of residency, I subsequently felt "called" to a career serving underserved populations. The Combined program has allowed me to pursue more experience in global health, having gone to a medical missions trip in Haiti earlier this year. As a PGY-4, I look forward to utilizing my skills and am presently considering applying for both Internal Medicine and Family Medicine fellowships in global health. I thank the Combined program for training me with a skill set that affords me such opportunities in both family and internal medicine.
