    • Alexander B. Levitov MD, FCCM, FCCP, RDCS is a professor in the division of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine and Director of the Ultrasound Training Program at Eastern Virginia Medical School.  He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Critical Care Medicine and a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer. Dr. Levitov is a nationally and internationally recognized expert in bedside ultrasound.  He received the Presidential Citation for Outstanding Contributions from the Society of Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Levitov is a visiting professor at Harvard Medical School, Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany and Yangzhou University in China. He directs several Certified Medical Education ultrasound courses in the United States and internationally.  His invitational lectures are too numerous to count. He is a known and respected teacher and is a member of the University of Virginia Academy of distinguished educators since 2006. Dr. Levitov serves on the SCCM’s Critical Care Ultrasound Guidelines Task Force, the ACCP’s Taskforce on Critical Care Ultrasonography, and he is a member of the ACC/AHA’s Non-invasive Evaluation Appropriateness Task Force. Dr. Levitov holds several patents related to medical innovation including ultrasonography.                                                                                                                                                                          


      His publications include two authored textbooks on bedside ultrasonography, the first one currently undergoing its second edition.  He has published extensively on the topic in journals such as: Kardiologiia; Circulation; American Journal of Cardiology; Lancet; British Journal of Cancer; Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy; Critical Care Medicine; Annals of Pharmacotherapy; Intensive Care; Journal of Ultrasound Medicine; Cardiology Research and Practice; Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.  He is a member of the Editorial Board of Critical Ultrasound Journal.  Dr. Levitov has served on numerous committees: Society of Critical Care Medicine Bedside Ultrasonography, Appropriateness Criteria Task Force; American College of Cardiology, Appropriateness Criteria Task Force; Co-chair SCCM “Ultrasound in critical care” course; SCCM Graduate and Resident Education Committee; Carilion Clinic Board of Governors Research Committee; University of Virginia Academy of Distinguished Educator Curriculum Liaison; Critical Care Ultrasound Clinical Competency Development; Physician Leadership Academy, Carilion Health System; Critical Care Committee, Carilion Health System; Physician Champion Ventilator Associated Pneumonia Outcome Research Project (VAPOR); Chairman, Ventilator Acquired Pneumonia Reduction Multidisciplinary Target Group; Chairman, ICU Length of Stay Project; Infection Control Committee, Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.  He has been awarded research grants from: The Department of Defense TATRC (Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center); US National Institutes of Health Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB); Virginia Commonwealth Health Research Board.                                                               


      Dr. Levitov was born in Moscow, Russia and received his medical degree from First Moscow Medical School in 1977. He completed an Internal Medicine residency at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and a Fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at the Institute of Critical Care in Moscow, Russia, where he started his career in bedside ultrasound in1978.
