Welcome from the Program Director

Thank you for your interest in the Portsmouth Family Medicine Residency Program. Portsmouth Family Medicine is one of the two Family Medicine Residency Programs in the Department of Community and Family Medicine with Eastern Virginia Medical School. Our faculty members are actively involved not only in residency education, but also in medical student education. We are located in downtown Portsmouth, 10 minutes away from Norfolk and 20 minutes away from Virginia Beach. Our unique setting allows us to be an active part EVMS and part of an academic community hospital at the same time. We are the only residency program at the 466 bed Bon Secours Maryview Hospital. Our residents are first-responders and are the leaders on the Rapid Response and Code Blue teams in the hospital. Our exceptional training in hospital medicine is complimented by the training in the clinic, where we see a very diverse patient population of all ages. Our clinic is recognized as a Level 3 Patient-Centered Medical Home by the National Committee for Quality Assurance. We are proud to provide our residents with a well-rounded curriculum that is tailored to their educational goals. Our graduates work in outpatient settings, hospital medicine, work in urgent care centers, public health centers, emergency department and academic settings. Our graduates continued their training in obstetrics, occupational medicine, sleep medicine, health informatics and geriatrics fellowships.

We are committed to our community. Our residents provide care at the H.E.R. shelter for battered women and children, and the Portsmouth Health Department. Our residents and faculty work in the EVMS student run HOPES clinic. Residents are involved in the community health assessments. Our residents have an opportunity to obtain additional training in Public Health through Eastern Virginia Medical School and Old Dominion University, which can be credited toward a future Maters of Public Health degree.

Portsmouth Family Medicine and its faculty are committed to education evidence-based patient care, population health and research. Our residents are bright, ambitious, hardworking, and eager to learn young professionals just like you. I invite you to explore our website to learn more about our program.
