Stephen C. Brawley, MD

Stephen Brawley, MD, PhD, joins EVMS Portsmouth Family Medicine after retiring as a Captain in the United States Navy, where he received three Navy Commendation Medals and two Navy Achievement Medals. Dr. Brawley graduated with honors from the U.S. Naval Academy with a Bachelors of Science in Aerospace in 1984 and received the Arleigh Burke Scholarship to attend Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. He completed a PhD in Aeronautics and received the Admiral Wilkinson Fellowship in Aerospace. He received his medical degree from the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas, in 2000 and completed a fellow medicine residency at the Naval Hospital in Camp Lejeune, NC, in 2010. He later completed a Family Medicine Faculty Development Fellowship at UNC Chapel Hill, NC, in 2016. Dr. Brawley is board certified in Family Medicine.
Dr. Brawley was assistant professor in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 1994-1996 where he taught multiple Aerospace Engineering classes to graduate students in the armed forces; was Chief of Medical Staff, 2012-2013, and was Family Medicine Department Head, 2011-2012, at the Naval Hospital in Naples, Italy. He led UVA members in medical missions to Panama and Ghana as a member of the Global Brigades Medical Humanitarian Corps, 2013 and 2014. He was a volunteer physician for the Caring Community Clinic, 2014 to present, serving the uninsured citizens of Onslow County, NC. Dr. Brawley was Outstanding Family Medicine Resident in 2009, presented by the NC Academy of Family Physicians.
