Dr. Jason Dukes was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., but spent the majority of his childhood in Newport News, Va. He completed his undergraduate degree in Cultural Anthropology at Duke University. After obtaining a master’s degree in biological sciences at Drexel University, he attended Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons. Medical school not only piqued his interest in disease pathology, but also in health systems. This led Dr. Dukes to enroll in Columbia’s MD/MBA dual degree program.

Dr. Dukes completed his internal medicine residency at New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell (NYP Cornell) and stayed an additional year to serve as Chief Medical Resident of Quality Improvement. Upon completion of his chief resident position, he became faculty at Yale University. At Yale, half his time was dedicated to QI and population health activities. To be closer to family, Dr. Dukes, his wife and their two young children moved back to the Hampton Roads area in 2018.

Now he is an Assistant Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School. Dr. Dukes is involved in patient care in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. His professional interests outside of direct patient care include hospital administration, quality improvement and patient safety.

At EVMS, Dr. Dukes also serves as director of the Community-Engaged Learning Capstone course and the co-director for the Improvement Science Fellowship.
