Health-Care Career Exploration
For young people considering a career in health care, the educational options can seem endless — and confusing.
That realization helped inspire the EVMS Brock Institute’s creation of the Health-Care Career Exploration Event. The goal is to expose high school students to the variety of health-care career opportunities.
The inaugural event in this annual project was held in March 2016 at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk. Students from all Norfolk high schools were invited to take part.
The 2016 event brought together students and faculty from EVMS, Hampton University, Old Dominion University and Tidewater Community College for panel discussions on careers in medicine, nursing and the various health career options. The event included hands-on demonstrations of bystander CPR, intubation simulation, neuroscience and robotics.
Dedicated sessions for parents focused on college preparation, the college application process and financial aid. Breakfast and lunch were provided for all participants and the Brock Institute arranged for give-aways of technology and gift cards as incentives to boost attendance.
