Community Impact Day

In keeping with EVMS' community mission, all incoming medical and school of health professions students participate in a community outreach partnership with P. B. Young Elementary in the Young Terrace neighborhood of Norfolk. This community service project, known as "Community Impact Day," provides both experiential learning to new EVMS students while also improving the health and wellness of local residents. Furthermore, the project introduces students to local issues relating to social justice, equity and determinants of health. For CID, Interdisciplinary "Impact" teams are formed of one EVMS facilitator and approximately 13-15 incoming students, representing both the Schools of Medicine and Health Professions. A coordinator from P.B. Young Elementary is assigned to each EVMS Impact Team to provide onsite instruction, project-specific supplies, and oversight of the Team's work. Impact teams work on projects in line with the needs of P.B. Young Elementary School, which included such activities as beautifying the school grounds, preparing and organizing classrooms for the upcoming school year, assembling student backpacks with school supplies and decorating classrooms and bulletin boards. Both faculty and M4 students help facilitate this annual service day event.
