Specifying the character encoding helps present readable text in PDF viewers, according to Adobe. Some character-encoding issues may not be able to be repaired in Acrobat. To be sure that a document is properly encoded, verify that the necessary fonts are installed on your system. If the correct fonts are not installed, use a different font in the source document and then re-create the PDF.
