The Women in Medicine (WIM)
program in the Office for Womens Affairs at Eastern Virginia Medical School assists
women in their endeavors to foster gender equity in medicine, to plan and develop careers
optimally, and to set higher standards of achievement. The program thereby seeks to
improve pathways to leadership and career advancement by providing opportunities to
socialize, network, brainstorm, learn skills, share ideas, advise others, and have input
into a nationwide effort to foster a manageable balance of career and family.

The Mentoring Program
The success of mentoring programs demonstrated by
the numbers of women who remain in academic medicine, assume positions of leadership,
attain academic rank, and conduct and publish research inspired EVMS to institute a
mentoring program that provides avenues for skill development in areas that will enhance
careers.
The AMA and AAMC studied elements required for success in
medicine, and five recommendations emerged:
- superior competency
- determination to succeed
- maintaining good working relationships with peers
- maintaining good working relationships with superiors, and
- having a mentor
The first four attributes depend mainly on personal
ability and commitment, but the last one requires the assistance of another. The Office
for Womens Affairs offers a facilitated mentoring program to assist women students,
residents, and junior faculty in planning and developing their careers by providing
skill-building opportunities, with the advice and guidance of more experienced senior
faculty members. |
