Dr. Schellhammer was chairman of the Department of Urology (1989-2000) and program director of the Urology Residency Program (1980-2002). He is medical director of the Virginia Prostate Center and is a member of a number of boards and committees. He is past trustee of the American Board of Urology, as well as past president of the Society of Urologic Oncology (SUO). He is president elect of the American Urological Association (May 2006-May 2007).

He has received the following awards:
• Award for Outstanding Contributions to Graduate Medical Education, from EVMS, 1987
• Mims Oschner Award
• Earnest Miles Award of the British Association of Urological Surgeons
• Fourth Annual Dean's Faculty Achievement Award
• listed in Town and Country as the Best Medical Specialist in North America for Cancer (Prostate)

He has written hundreds of articles on the topic of urology and has made over 200 presentations and invited lectures. He has also participated in numerous clinical trials.
