Department of Urology
Clerkships/Visiting Students
We welcome visiting students from other
LCME-accredited U.S. medical schools to EVMS. Each year several students
spend a senior elective with us. The guidelines are listed below.
Guidelines for Elective Application and
Registration of
Visiting Students
- All visiting students must apply
through the Office of Education, Eastern Virginia Medical School,
P.O. Box 1980, Norfolk, VA 23501 (757-446-8416). If a student
contacts a department, the student should be referred to the Office
of Education. Confirmation for electives is given by the Office of
Education. Only persons currently enrolled in an accredited medical
school are eligible to apply for admission to electives at EVMS.
- Visiting students may only apply
for senior electives. A visiting student must have satisfactorily
completed all basic science courses (including physical diagnosis)
and, by the starting date of the requested elective, the applicant
must have completed satisfactorily a minimum of thirty-six weeks of
full-time clinical experience during which the student's primary
responsibility was to follow patients on a teaching service. This
experience must include at least four separate disciplines from
among the following: Family Medicine, General Internal Medicine,
Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and General
Surgery. Experience in each of the four disciplines must be for a
duration of at least four weeks.
- An elective application must be
completed and approved by the visiting student's medical school
official authorizing the elective no later than four weeks prior to
the beginning of an elective.
- Each request for an elective must
have the approval of the Urology Department and the Office of
Education.
- In most cases, confirmation for
electives are given no more than 60 days prior to the beginning of
the elective as EVMS students have priority on all electives.
- Each student must register with
the EVMS Registrar's office prior to beginning the elective. A
registration fee must be paid to the Registrar on or prior to the
first day of the elective. A student ID card will be issued at the
EVMS Human Resources Office following registration.
- Proof of adequate health insurance
coverage must be presented at the time of registration.
- Each student is responsible for
obtaining accommodations during his/her stay here. There is a
network of students who regularly offer accommodations for visiting
students; this can be arranged through the EVMS Office of Student
Affairs (757-446-5805).
- EVMS will provide evaluations to
the sponsoring institutions, but credit for elective experiences
will be given by the institution granting the medical degree to the
student.
